HINTS

Formatting

Margins: The basic margins are 1" on top, bottom, and right, and 1.5" on left to allow for binding. Preliminary pages and the first page of each chapter should have a 2" top margin. If your technical software program does not allow this, check with the Graduate School Office.

Justification: Whether or not to justify is the choice of the student and the committee.

Page numbers:
Preliminary pages: Lowercase Roman numerals are used on preliminary pages, and these are at the bottom center (page numbering can almost without exception be done by the software). The abstract and the signature page are not numbered. ALL pages are counted.
Text pages: Page number should appear bottom center on first pages of chapters. All other page numbers should appear at the top right margin.

Spacing: If both chapter headings and chapter titles are used, it is recommended that there be a triple space between heading and title and double space between title and text. Spacing should be consistent.

Style: Whatever style is accepted for the discipline in which the thesis is written is acceptable. Again, usage should be consistent.

Paper must be of "archival quality." Minimum requirements are that the paper be

Assistance with WordPerfect 5.1 is available in the Office of Organized Research.

Students may bring a preliminary copy of the dissertation/thesis to the Office of Organized Research to be checked for accurate formatting and consistency of style.
