Program Description:

The Specialist in Education degree (Ed.S.) with a major in Educational Leadership offers educators a planned but flexible program of studies designed to improve their general educational and specific professional competencies as leaders in the public school systems. The Specialist degree program is designed to provide study beyond the Master's degree and is based on recommendations from professional organizations and accrediting associations.
The Specialist degree program is a sixth-year program of study consisting of a minimum of 30 hours beyond the Master's degree. Each candidate's program will be planned during the initial enrollment period with the adviser to ensure that professional requirements are met. The 30 hour program of study calls for 15 hours of core courses and a 15 hour combination of Foundation courses, cognate courses, and/or electives.

Admission Requirement:

To be considered for the Specialist degree program, each candidate must complete, in addition to the admission requirements of the Graduate School, the following:
1. Have at least a 3.25 GPA in a master's degree from an accredited institution and program.
2. Have three years of experience as a certified teacher in an educational insitution.
3. Hold a current teaching license.
The student may apply for admission to candidacy when any provisions attached to admission have been satisfied and when the student hast completed 12-18 hours of graduate work with a 3.00 grade point average. The application for admission to candidacy must be filed no later than the completion of 18 semester hours of graduate credit. Failure to gain admission to candidacy at the time that no more than 18 hours have been accumulated may result in additional enrollment and will cause a delay in graduation. Students accumulating 18 hours of graduate credit with less than 3.00 grade point average will be dropped from the Graduate School.
All candidates for the Ed.S. degree in Educational Leadership seeking licensure should take the appropriate examination(s) required by the state(s) in which licensure is sought. A copy of the scores should be sent to Arkansas State University.
