Program Description:
|
The Master of Arts in Speech Communication and Theatre is co-offered by the Department of Communication Studies, College of Communications, and the Department of Theatre, College of Fine Art. The graduate student's adviser should come from the Department of Communication Studies if the student's primary interest is communication, or from the Department of Theatre if the student's primary interest is theatre.
Students in speech communication work closely with the debate team, the speech lab and the community outreach program. They sometimes serve as assistant coaches while traveling with and supervising the team. They use the degree to prepare for debate coaching positions of their own, further graduate study or enhancement of their professional careers.

Admission Requirement:
|
Applicants seeking admission to the Master of Arts degree program in Communication Studies and Theatre must submit a writing sample consisting of a recent term paper or research paper.
A student may concentrate in either speech communication or theatre, and may complete at least six hours in the other area. With approval of the adviser, a student may complete up to six hours in cognate courses.
A reading knowledge of one modern foreign language is a requirement for the Master of Arts degree, though candidates may substitute a research tool (a statistics course or its equivalent) for the language requirements. If a statistical course or its equivalent is used to meet the language requirements, it cannot be counted for credit toward the degree requirements. The language requirement may be met by having earned 12 semester hours in a foreign language, or by passing an examination administered by the language faculty. Two years of high school credit in the foreign language will substitute for six hours of the 12-hour requirement.
